As one of the oldest medical treatments in China, Bian Stone therapy has a history almost as long as Chinese civilization itself. Unearthed cultural relics show that Bian Stone therapy has existed as early as the Stone Age, but due to the scarcity of raw materials, the ancient traditional Bian Stone therapy has been lost in the Eastern Han Dynasty, which lasted for more than 2,000 years.

"Silk Book" and "Bamboo Slips"

In 1975, a "Silk Book '' was unearthed from the Han Tomb in Mawangdui, Changsha, Hunan Province (about 180-160 BC in the early Western Han Dynasty). In the same year, the medical book "Bamboo Slips' ' unearthed from the Han tomb in Zhangjiashan, Changsha, Hunan Province, in which "Maishu' ' contains the method of Bian Stone and moxibustion.

In the famous "Huangdi Neijing", Bian Stone therapy is listed as one of the earliest five traditional Chinese medicine therapies, while the other four therapies are acupuncture, moxibustion, medicine, and guided pressing.

 

Sibin Bian Stone

According to ancient records (about 2070 BC to 1600 BC), Sibin pumice stone was selected as the raw material for the chime of court musical instruments, called "Sibin floating chime". which produced unique musical tones enjoyed by ancient China's ruling elite.

Later, Sibin stone was made into medical equipment for Bian Stone therapy.

 

Sibin Bian Stone Reappears

In 1978, 13 ancient musical instruments - stone chimes were unearthed in Tengzhou, Shandong. (The chime is an ancient stone percussion instrument, an important musical instrument and a ritual instrument in court or clan sacrifices.) But two of them were damaged, and the archaeologists and members of the geological expert team felt very sorry, so they tried to find stones that could be used to make replacement chimes. Later, this news was learned by a Chinese musician, Mr. Yang Junzi. He is a musician who loves ancient music and became very interested in the unearthed ancient chimes. He learned from ancient books that ancient chimes were made of "Sibin pumice stone", and "Sibin '' was located in the area of the ancient Sishui River, that is, the current Shandong and Shanxi areas.

 

So  Mr. Yang Jun Zi embarked on a journey to find stones, he traveled all over the Surabaya River Basin, year after year, with unremitting effort, he experienced extreme hardship in his search.  Finally, Mr. Yang lived up to his painstaking efforts, and one day, he searched around the river embankment in Shandong Province and found a stone, which resembled a Sibin stone, and when he struck it with a hammer, it produced a pleasant musical tone. At that time, Mr. Yang was very excited, and finally found a stone that could produce a melodic sound. Chinese geologists and archaeologists tested the rock using modern petrophysics techniques, and finally confirmed that the most primitive and ideal rock recorded in ancient books, the Sibin pumice, had been rediscovered.

 

After finding the stone with a pronounced rhythm, Mr. Yang cut the stone according to the shape of the unearthed chime, but to his disappointment, the stone could not make a tone after cutting it into the shape of a chime. Mr. Yang was not discouraged, so he tried to find out whether the ancient books recorded the materials for making chimes, but unfortunately the ancient books and documents did not mention them. Although the continuous attempt is still a failure, Mr. Yang did not give up and continued to study unremittingly. Finally, after countless failures, he discovered the technique of making chimes, and successfully copied the two damaged excavations. The chimes made by Mr. Yang have also obtained nationally recognized patents. 

 

Ancient books called Sibin pumice stone is properly named Sibin Bian Stone 

In 2006, the founder of Bian Stone Loft, Dr. Regina Kong (Doctor of Medicine, Guangzhou Southern Medical University, specializing in Bian Stone treatment) submitted the "Sibin Pumice" provided by Mr. Yang Jun Zi to the Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences for testing. After detailed scientific testing, Academician Xie Xiande, the head of the Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Geology and Petrology expert, Foreign Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences), according to the test report, believes that the ancient book is called Sibin pumice, which is inappropriate. In the field of geology and petrology, the crystal structure of pumice is porous, while the existing Sibinite crystal structure is dense and neatly arranged, which cannot be called pumice in this case. Sibin Pumice is now called "Sibin Bian Stone".

Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry: Detection of Sibin Bian Stone

The Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has conducted extensive research and testing on the physical properties, chemical structure and radioactivity of Sibin Bian Stone.

 

The results show that Sibin Bian Stone is a crystal structure of limestone, calcite nano crystals. The CaCO3 content is as high as 96%. It is harmless and the radiation levels are extremely low. Other components include pyrite, anatase, and graphite, 1–3 μm in diameter, distributed in gaps in calcite structures. 

 

There are no traces of biological debris, and its organic matter content is as low as 0.09%. In the test in the 8-14 μ m spectral range, the emissivity was 0.923. It shows that Sibin Bian Stone is a good infrared radiation emitter. Calcite nano crystals have a heat capacity of up to 86.73/J, making them an excellent medical device through their thermal radiation properties.
